Welcome back to UTP (Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS), an university situation in rural Perak (state), Malaysia. Or the UTP-ians love to call it, middle of the jungle.

I was back in UTP again for my final year of studies after seven months of internship, followed by three weeks of holiday, where I spent one week in Phnom Penh, Cambodia and the rest of my holiday in my hometown, Kuching, Sarawak, Malaysia.

To those of you who have been my friends since before 2016–2017, you have noticed that I always write life in UTP series. You may be wondering why I didn’t write any last year, which will detail regarding my life in UTP (3rd year 1st and 2nd semester). I didn’t write due to personal reasons. Anyway, let’s talk about the beginning of final year in UTP.

This final year 1st semester is going to be very different for me. As it is going to be very different from the previous three years in UTP, where more than 80% of the subjects requires studying and taking final exam. This year, there will be more focus on two of these subjects — Final Year Project I (FYP I) and Plant Design Project I (PDP I). I have to do more research by downloading the papers and read them one by one. There are other subjects too.

What is also interesting in this semester is that I get to choose which major I want. I choose Petrochemical and Gas Engineering, in which Advanced Reaction Engineering (ARE) falls under it. I am hoping to turn my weakness into strength by acing the ARE since I got B for Reaction Engineering, which is the prerequisite to for the ARE subject.

Here’s what I did for the first few weeks in UTP:

1. Catching up with my friends.

Left: My friend bought food for me.
Middle and Right: Catching up with another friend and here’s the food we have.

2. FYP I and PDP I meeting

FYP I: Met my supervisor and discuss about my FYP title, which is something to do with hydrogen production.

PDP I: Here is the interesting part. Our task is designing a plant that will lower the gas emissions to a stipulated amount set by the government in line with the Clean Air Regulations (2014), otherwise known as CAR 2014, one of the environmental regulations in Malaysia. The emissions needed to be cut are carbon dioxide and sulfur dioxide. We have a weekly group meeting with our supervisor.

3. Food hunting in Ipoh, Perak

It has been a while since I am in this fancy place. Man I really love this place.

[Week 1]
Friday (Sep 6)
Top Left: Hakka noodles at Paris Restaurant
Top Middle: Chicken Rice at Hawker Chan. Fun fact: I tried the branch in Singapore before.
Top Right: Crepe

[Week 2]
Friday (Sep 13)
Center left: Dim Sum (Chinese food)
Center right: Shaved ice
Saturday (Sep 14)
Bottom left: Soya bean

[Week 3]
Monday (Sep 16, Malaysia Day)
Bottom right: Dim Sum again

And the hidden gems in Ipoh:

Left: A small lane in Ipoh filled with old buildings in tree
Middle and right: Book Xcess store, where high quality books are sold at affordable price

4. Mid Autumn festival

Mid Autumn festival is time where friends and/or family come together and eat mooncake and have lanterns together. This year, me and my friend celebrated it in Domino’s Pizza.

Pizza + Mooncake + Friend

It has been quite eventful these first few weeks. Hope that everything went smoothly in this semester. Thanks for reading.
